In every sport, there are people who achieve a certain amount of success and turn professionals. Then there are those who go on to even greater heights, driven by a passion that even the professionals find hard to match. These are those individuals who find a sense of purpose in bodybuilding to such an extent that they end up taking things to the extreme level. It is in honor of these individuals that the term extreme bodybuilding has been coined.
Think of any sport and you will see that every professional athlete has a favourite aspect within that sport. Kobe Bryant may not love defending as much as he loves scoring, and we know for sure that Shaquille O’Neal doesn’t like free-throws as much as he likes throwing his weight around in the hole. In bodybuilding, things are no different as athletes and professionals tend to favor a certain body part or exercise routine more than other. That little routine, then, becomes their obsession and they take things to the level of extreme bodybuilding.
An extreme bodybuilder may also be a professional, and no professional can be an extreme bodybuilder for all parts of the body. However, there are individuals who have pushed the limit of bodybuilding and changed the way the world has looked at the sport.
Extreme Bodybuilders by Body Parts
Every year, when someone wins the Mr. Olympia title, the winner is chosen from the best bodybuilders in the world. However, there is no single bodybuilder who has the perfect body or physique in every single aspect. There are individuals who have better biceps, like Phil Heath, in terms of size and shape while someone like Arnold Schwarzenegger was said to have had a massive 58-inch chest that was way ahead of his time.
Similarly, Kevin Levrone is said to have the best triceps in the world while Dorian Yates has the back to beat all backs! What we are basically saying is that there is no one bodybuilder who is considered as the epitome of bodybuilding and most of them have weaknesses that they do well to work on and compete with. However, there is another form of extreme bodybuilding that we need to be aware of – the kind that ends up hurting the athlete rather than helping them.
Many athletes and professional bodybuilders end up getting into a maniacal urge to get bigger, either on an overall level or simply on one or two body parts. For example, Moustafa Ismail is one of those extreme bodybuilders who focuses more on the upper arms. While he has a decent physique in other parts of his body, his adoration for the biceps and triceps have led him to develop 31-inch muscles. That, for those who cannot imagine the size, is more than the waist-size of most people.
The Dangers of Extreme Bodybuilding
So far, Ismail has been working out and taking supplements to maintain those massive arms but others have not been so lucky. Gregg Valentino is one of those individuals who held the record for the biggest biceps in the world. He used Synthol, a synthetic oil injected into the arms to give them shape, but things went downhill very quickly. Things went from bad to worse as one such Synthol injection led to a hematoma, which then led to a botched-up drain-job and then a visit to the hospital.
Others, like Chad Brothers, went overboard with their steroid dosage and ended up losing their cool at a gym. With hormones all over the place, Chad ended up damaging equipment in his gym before the police subdued the giant of a man with Tasers, eventually leading to his death. In the quest to become an extreme bodybuilder, people end up relying on banned substances, harmful substances, and end up hurting their bodies in the long run rather than enjoying their road to fitness.
Choose your Mentors and Goals Carefully
If you are thinking about getting into the world of extreme bodybuilding, you need to understand why you are getting in and what you plan to achieve through it. If you try to reach your goal at any cost, you are bound to end up hurting yourself. However, if you work towards your goal systematically, it may take longer but you will eventually get there. Then there are those bodybuilders who suddenly seemed to have built-up bulk and size overnight, like Dr. Dre!
Nobody recalls Dr. Dre bodybuilding but everyone remembers him in his overweight form. However, the Dr. Dre of today is big and spends over two-hours at the gym every day. His transformation has taken time but due to his lack of public appearances, it is harder to keep track of his development. Was he on the juice? No one can say but the fact is, he has taken his weight-training seriously and worked his way into the world of bodybuilding.
There are other giants of extreme bodybuilding and anyone who has seen Lou Ferrigno bodybuilding or Jay Cutler bodybuilding will know that there are many who have worked their way to the top without really indulging in the wrong-side of extreme bodybuilding. Sure, steroids were legal when Ferrigno won his Mr. Olympia titles, but his training was all about finding a balance between exercise and not trying to get results quickly.
People getting into the world of extreme bodybuilding often look at John Cena bodybuilding or Joe Weider bodybuilding and think that they want to look like those people as soon as possible. That usually leads them into the wrong side of bodybuilding, something everyone should avoid. People like Lou Ferrigno and Joe Weider spent a lot of time working on their bodies. If you are willing to put in that kind of time and effort in maintaining the right kind of diet, following the right exercise-routine as well as getting the right amount of rest & recuperation.
Do that and you will find that the world of extreme bodybuilding is much closer to you than you might think!
